Our Mission
At Sustainable Horizons Institute, we work toward increasing U.S. competitiveness by building a workforce poised for innovation and strengthening national security. We focus on transforming work environments in which leading scientists and researchers spend their careers. Our mission is to support and mentor scientists, mathematicians, and engineers from all communities and foster science and technology ecosystems that value all voices. We build sustainable connections between students, faculty, and professionals so that everyone is welcome, everyone thrives, and everyone benefits from more innovative, more robust science.
Our Vision
We see a world in which all students, academics, scientists, and engineers work in environments that are inviting, engaging, and reflective of their lived experiences. We are working with individuals and organizations to help build vibrant workforces poised to tackle increasingly challenging scientific problems with greater innovation and higher-quality solutions.
Our Story
Since 2014, Sustainable Horizons Institute (SHI) has been expanding the basic science enterprise and increasing U.S. competitiveness by providing sustained academic support and professional development to scientists and engineers and by building sustainable connections between over 1,000 students, faculty, and professionals in science and technology.
Dr. Mary Ann Leung launched SHI after successful careers in software, computational science, and academic guidance. As a program manager for the prestigious Department of Energy’s Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (DOE CSGF) program that had funded her own research, Dr. Leung doubled the number and overall quality of applicants. As she gained national recognition for her innovations, she realized that she wanted a platform that could provide broader, deeper, and more sustained support to students.
The result is the Sustainable Horizons Institute. Through their SHI experiences, students have strengthened their research skills, have been provided opportunities that might not have been available to them otherwise, and have seen a direct positive impact on their career paths. While faculty and staff have developed lifelong connections, leading to collaborations and new areas of research. In addition, key organizational leaders, faculty, and staff have gained skills in promoting respect and creativity in their work teams and larger ecosystem, and learned about available talent from sources they would have never considered or been exposed to otherwise.
