Recent regional data shows that mental health has become a top priority in the Coachella Valley, with suicide rates reaching approximately 19.4 deaths per 100,000 people. This figure surpasses both Riverside County’s and the national averages (HARC Data, 2023). National research further emphasizes the urgency of this issue: nearly nine out of ten Gen-Z youth report experiencing regular mental health challenges. However, 31% feel embarrassed to seek help, and 21% find it difficult to locate a relatable healthcare provider (Blue Shield of California & The Harris Poll, 2023).

In response, BGCofCV has prioritized culturally competent mental health services and peer support groups through our newest initiative: Resilient Youth, Thriving Futures. Although this initiative is a top priority, continued outreach, expanded access, and ongoing education are essential to ensuring that all Coachella Valley youth feel comfortable and supported in seeking help.

Currently, 20 club members are receiving regular services, including seven new cases added this term. Additionally, peer-to-peer group sessions are improving the emotional and mental well-being of hundreds of young people. As a result, members are gaining grounding and mindfulness strategies, building healthier daily routines, and developing conflict resolution skills.

The outcomes have been significant: a 15-year-old member who previously engaged in daily self-harm has completely eliminated that behavior. Furthermore, five additional youth aged 9 to 13 are now in full remission from self-harming behaviors. Members dealing with depression have reported increased resilience and stronger social connections, while those facing family issues have learned constructive communication strategies.

Success stories include a 12-year-old girl who overcame severe anxiety and body image issues, allowing her to enjoy her summer with newfound confidence. An 11-year-old boy has reduced behavioral outbursts, improved his academic performance, and now channels his energy into sports and the Club’s boxing program.
